INTRODUCTION

Of the 24 Prabandhas that are included in the Gita Govinda, the first has a different number of couplets. Guru Dr Pali Chandra brings to our attention the first Prabandha of the Gita Govinda, which describes the Dashavatar. Even more uniquely, it contains 11 couplets or padas, which indicate Jayadeva’s literary ingenuity at its finest. The first 10 couplets Jayadeva’s idea of Lord Vishnu’s 10 avatars, while the 11th is a reference to poet himself.

The ten incarnation of Lord Vishnu described in this song are – Matsya (the fish), Kurma (the tortoise), Varaha (the boar), Narasimha (the half man-half-lion god), Vamana (the dwarf), Parasurama (the axe-wielding sage), Rama (the slayer of Ravana), Balarama (Krishna’s elder brother), Buddha (the enlightened one) and Kalki (the redeemer-horseman). Each couplet summarizes either the central purpose or the chief feature of the incarnation, highlighting the manner in which Krishna came in as the valorous rescuer, and saved humankind from degeneration or death.

The mythology suggests that incarnations emerge during times of crisis, when the world is plagued by evil, injustice, and inequality. They serve to eliminate negativity, ushering in positive transformation and establishing a new order. Jayadeva has mentioned Keshava as an epithet of vishnu in the refrain. This post focuses on the ten universally recognized Avataras, yet it acknowledges the significance of Buddha within Orissa's socio-cultural context. Sri Jayadeva, recognizing Buddha's importance, judiciously integrated him into the pantheon. The concluding chant Jai jagadisa hare was dedicated to Sri Jagannath in reverence to each Avatar.

This Prabandh is primarily considered as an ode in honour of the divine. Guru Pali Chandra focuses on how the author represents the different avatars of Lord Krishna, bringing to light the evolution of the human, and how each version of him on the earth plays its own unique role. She brings this original composition to a modern audience, by effecting a careful balance between Jayadeva’s Vrindavan and the modern day.

COURSE STRUCTURE

This initial prabandha or song from the Gita Govinda depicts an evolutionary process, allowing dancers the freedom to interpret each character using various dance vocabularies for presentation in front of modern audiences. In the choreography of dasavatara stotra, Guru Pali Chandra skillfully blends elements from classical forms with contemporary dance, contemplating its evolution and projecting its future. She personally crafted certain concepts in the traditional style, and today it is famous as the Pali Chandra Techniques (PCT) in choreography.

Comprising 10 ragas and talas, the music, meticulously curated by Guru Pali Chandra, aims to convey the beauty of this poetry to her students and all enthusiasts wishing to explore its essence and appreciate its grandeur. The whole programme has six central components: Introduction, Explanation and Choreography Tips, Teaching and Demonstrations, Poem in Action, Performance with Subtitles and Music Download. As the composition was originally written in Sanskrit, subtitles are provided in the performance for a holistic understanding of the text. English is the medium for the introduction, explanations, teaching, demonstrations and poem in action.

No Music downlaod available. The first segment of the lesson video is the introduction to the entire Prabandh, through which the students get a general idea of the content and mood of each song. Following the introduction, the Guru focuses on teaching the viewer the central meaning of the shlokas. Next, the Guru introduces each pada or couplet, explaining the core ethos of Jayadeva’s words, alongside choreography tips. ‘Practical Teaching’ sessions are held after the explanation of each and every pada.

The Performance video features the master dance presentation. Guru Dr Pali Chandra has choreographed the 1st Prabandh, dasavatara stotra, based on her creative interpretation of the great poet’s classic work. This Prabandh presents the ten avatars of Lord Krishna and the poet chronicles their evolution through the annals of time. It is an ode to the importance of Lord Krishna in our lives. This performance comes with two sets of English subtitles. The Guru’s interpretation forms the first subtitle and is meant for the benefit of the dance students. Beneath that, another English subtitle is the literal English translation of poet Jayadeva’s Sanskrit text. This second subtitle is being included for two reasons. Firstly, to show the original content and do justice to the great poet. Secondly, to give an idea to students about how creative freedom can be exercised to develop a distinct choreography for an ancient text. This, it is hoped, will contribute towards promoting their choreography skills.

Poem in Action is an attractive, user-friendly and easily-understandable capsule for both novices and experienced art enthusiasts to understand and enjoy. In this section, Guru Dr Pali Chandra presents the essence of the Gita Govinda through the medium of abhinaya with the support of an audio version of the English translation of the classical text. The purpose fulfilled by each avatar and how Lord Krishna is worthy and deserving of praise is the most essential component of this Prabandha. This conveys the gist of the Gita Govinda to anybody who understands English and the universal language of Abhinaya.

The original music was composed for this dance presentation under the guidance of Guru Dr Pali Chandra with a team of eminent composers, singers and musicians. Subscribers are not allowed to alter the music or the choreography or use it in any other format or part of any other production. A lyric-and-meaning video has also been attached for quick reference.

The programme has been designed based on the Natyasastra and the Abhinaya Darpana so that students of all dance forms can make use of this content in their respective forms. Each padh is meticulously explored to uncover its depth and relevance for today's generation. Realism infuses the movement vocabulary, making it easily accessible and relatable.
