The Revered Doyen of Abhinaya
Bragha Bessell is one of India's most renowned Bharatanatyam exponents, widely acclaimed for her exceptional command over Abhinaya and Nritta. Since her arangetram in 1967, Bragha has committed her life to Bharatanatyam performing, teaching and choreographing to this date. Across this long arc, she has built a practice that brings together technical rigour, scholarly understanding, and a deeply felt spirituality on stage.

The strength of Bragha's art rests on the lineage of teachers who shaped her stellar career, and she frequently speaks in reverence of her six gurus. Her first guru was Sri Mangudi Durairaj Iyer, who initiated her into the form as a child and personally guided her earliest years of study. She then came under the tutelage of Sri Chidambaram P.S. Kunjithapadam Pillai, a disciple of Kattumannarkoil Muthukumara Pillai, with whom she trained for close to eighteen years. It was through him that she absorbed anga shuddham, focus, and the principles of complete stage presentation, and it was under his guidance that she made her debut at the Chidambaram Nataraja temple.
Her advanced studies took her to two of the most revered figures in the field. Padmashri Adyar K. Lakshman refined her line, broadened her repertoire, and encouraged her ongoing search for deeper learning. Padma Bhushan Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan then opened up the world of bhavam, characterisation, and interpretive subtlety, an association that proved to be the turning point of her artistic life.
Bragha also credits Guru Kamalarani, who taught her nattuvangam and remained a steady presence after her mother's passing, and the scholar V.A.K. Ranga Rao, who helped her arrive at the correct pronunciation and meaning of the songs she went on to teach.

Her many honours include the Nadana Peroli Award (1977), the Obul Reddy Endowment Award (1998), the Acharya Ratnakara Award from the Cleveland Aradhana Committee (2013), the Ananya Puraskar (2017), the Acharya Kala Bharathi from Sri Bharat Kalachar (2019), the Nritya Kalanidhi from the Music Academy, Chennai (2022), the Nritya Ratna from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore (2023), the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Trinity Arts Festival of India (2025), and the Nritya Perunjyoti Award from ABHAI (2026), among many others.
