Introduction

This digital Indian classical dance course is presented by Guru Dr Pali Chandra, one of the premier Kathak exponents in India. The subject matter is the 12th Prabandh (Ashtapadi) of poet Jayadeva’s Gita Govinda and the Guru carefully extrapolates the nuances of this medieval masterpiece. The song Pasyati Dishi Dishi (Natha Hare Jagannatha Hare) showcases Lord Krishna being informed of the emotional state of Radha, depressed and forlorn in His absence. The intensity of separation, the ensuing madness, and the despondence of heartbreak are some of the themes explored here.

This Kathak choreography shows the different stages of Radha’s spiralling emotions in the absence of her celestial lover. The monologue that deals with desire and absolute devotion is presented in this segment. The physical manifestation of her pain is central to this part of the Gita Govinda, and it is this aspect that Guru Dr Pali Chandra focuses on. The Kamavasthas or stages of love, bind this entire composition together.

The world Jayadeva lived in has changed drastically in the centuries since his time, yet his tale of yearning, pain and eventual fulfilment rings true to this day. Lord Krishna and Radha’s tale epitomises the ethos of ancient India’s deeply self-aware approach to love, faith and life itself.

This course is part of Guru Dr Pali Chandra’s humongous project of choreographing and stringing together all the 24 Prabandhas of the Gita Govinda. This is a record of sorts because such an artistic attempt is the first of its kind in recorded history.

Course Structure

The programme has been designed so that the learner comprehends every aspect of the original, with the help of Guru Dr Pali Chandra’s 21st-century interpretation. This class has six central components: Introduction, Explanation and Choreography Tips, Teaching and Demonstrations, Poem in Action, Performance with Subtitles and Music Download.

Jayadeva used the Ashtapadi or set of eight couplets to make a song, likewise the classes follow the same blueprint. The programme has been designed based on Natyashastra and Abhinaya Darpana so that students of all dance forms can make use of this content in their respective forms. As the composition was originally written in Sanskrit, subtitles are provided in the performance for a holistic understanding of the text. The global language English has been used for the introduction, explanations, teaching, demonstrations and poem in action. It is also used for the subtitles of the performances.

Pali Chandra Techniques (PCT): The ancient classic text demanded a unique dance language for presentation in front of a contemporary audience. Guru Dr Pali Chandra took up this challenge. She developed certain concepts in dance language and named them as Pali Chandra Techniques (PCT) in choreography.

Course Info

The original music was composed for this dance presentation under the guidance of Guru Dr Pali Chandra with a team of eminent composers, singers, and musicians.

A 5-minute edited music will be available for download to the subscribers of this program. Kindly provide due copyright acknowledgment while doing public performances. The entire programme is designed as a comprehensive set of 25 videos, spread across nine distinct sections, in sync with the Ashtapadi system of the original text. The lesson plans are crafted so as to aid easy understanding, learning and performance of the dance.

The first segment of the lesson video is the introduction to the entire Prabandh through which the students get a general idea of the content and mood of each song. Following the introduction, the Guru focuses on teaching the viewer the central meaning of the shlokas. Next, the Guru introduces each padh or couplet, with an explanation of the core ethos of Jayadeva’s words, alongside choreography tips. The students are carefully guided through each section as every stage of Radha’s condition is elaborated upon. ‘Practical Teaching’ sessions are held after the explanation of each and every padh.

The Performance video features the master dance presentation. Guru Dr Pali Chandra has choreographed each Prabandh of Jayadeva’s, based on her creative interpretation of the great poet’s classic work. This performance comes with two sets of English subtitles. The Guru’s interpretation forms the first subtitle, and is meant for the benefit of the dance students. Beneath that, there is another English subtitle which is the literal English translation of poet Jayadeva’s Sanskrit text. This second subtitle is being included for two reasons. Firstly, to show the original content and do justice to the great poet. Secondly, to give an idea to students about how creative freedom can be exercised to develop a distinct choreography for an ancient text. This, it is hoped, will contribute towards promoting their choreography skills.

Poem in Action is an attractive, user-friendly and easily-understandable capsule for both novices and experienced art enthusiasts to understand and enjoy. In this section, Guru Dr Pali Chandra presents the essence of the Gita Govinda through the medium of abhinaya with the support of an audio version of the English translation of the classical text. This conveys the gist of the Gita Govinda to anybody who understands English and the universal language of abhinaya.
