NatyaSutraOnline Hosts Free Webinar on Indian Classical Dance Forms

Date: 7th October 2020
Time: 07:00 pm to 8.30 pm IST
Duration: 90 minutes

The future of Indian Classical Dance, in light of the recently declared National Education Policy 2020 and the rise of COVID-19, must be discussed among as many of its stakeholders as possible. Thus, NatyaSutraOnline will host a free webinar on 7th October 2020 to initiate a conversation on the same, inviting panelists from different facets of Indian Classical Dance. Guru Pali Chandra, renowned Kathak dancer and scholar, will moderate the 90-minute session. Other speakers at the event will include eminent teachers and scholars such as Vidushi Sujata Mohapatra (Odissi), Rama Vaidyanathan (Bharatanatyam), Dr. Rajashree Warrier (Bharatanatyam), Smitha Rajan (Mohiniyattam), Dr. Methil Devika (Mohiniyattam) and Sreelakshmy Govardhanan (Kuchipudi).

Indian Classical Dance is on the verge of starting an exciting new journey. We can say that the barriers of distance and time between the teacher and the student is actually diminishing now. This is due to the increased accessibility of digital tools, now integral part of many dance education programs. The NEP 2020 encourages teachers and institutions to provide 'supplementary enrichment material and guidance' to students. The group of experienced performers, scholars, and digital content creators shall thus discuss the impact of these measures under the topic, ‘Dance as an Education’.

With an exhaustive database chronicling over 2000 years of India's dance heritage, NatyaSutraOnline wishes to reinvigorate the public interest in the subcontinent's art forms. COVID-19 has changed the way we perceive education, and India's traditional arts are also recognizing the advantages of a digital edge. The Guru and the shishya need not be separated due to unforeseen circumstances anymore. The pros and cons of these developments shall be investigated and explained by the esteemed panelists, and the proceedings can be accessed for free from on 7th October 2020.
